Choosing an Apprentice

Posted January 18th, 2010 by
Categories: Uncategorized

Along the path from where you are now to millions in revenue, thousands in readers, tens of thousands of prospects, or hundreds of clients — whatever criteria you use to define success for your coaching…there us is one key speedbump which is seldom talked about.

That is capacity.

This is especially true as your revenues grow up to six figures and you set your sights on building a seven-figure legacy business with a global impact.

How do you get your head around this problem? What secrets will ease your way through the growing pains?

In all the many thousands of hours of consulting, coaching and training I’ve done, there is only one key I’ve found to date that doesn’t require significant cash investment. And that is the concept of apprentices.

Several years ago I was one of those apprentices.

I’d been running my own recruitment business for some time, and had become disgruntled by putting great people into heirarchical organizations that stifled creativity and disregarded the whole person.

I decided to take a sabbatical and paid for supplies to begin volunteering with the Coaching Scoop’s Real Interviews project for Steve Davis and Thomas Leonard of CoachVille.

Some might say I had found myself a real winner of an apprenticeship program.

I tell you this story for two reasons.

(1) You may find yourself wishing for an apprenticeship for yourself, from time to time. It’s a great way to move quickly into new areas by finding a mentor who will trade you a lifetime of wisdom for your legwork.

(2) Regardless of where you think you ‘are’ in your work, you are ready for an apprentice. Because the benefits of an apprentice are in fact much greater to you than just the added pair of willing hands.

What you teach, you become.

And what you teach, also becomes your legacy.

As you mentor your apprentices, there is a point at which they become your proteges.

This is a tipping point that occurs when the apprentice graduates from learning to creating.

A few things to bear in mind as you prepare for apprentices:

(1) Don’t change what you do.

Design the apprentice relationships so that it doesn’t disrupt your productivity. Allow your apprentice to come into your existing set up. The key at the beginning is to increase your capacity, not add capacity.

Your apprentice is someone you invite to your house without cleaning up first. Soon enough, they’ll be helping you tidy things.

(2) Pick certain people for your apprentices. There are two main criteria.

You must like and respect them.

They should be entrepreneurially minded, meaning either they have run a business of their own OR they were brought up by familiy who did.

The latter covers just about every other characteristic you could want: loyalty, hard work, a sense of urgency, and a problem solving orientation.

(3) Use technology and systems to support the addition of new people to your business.

The most basic and essential way to induct an apprentice is to set up a system of shadowing. The simplest way is to set up your email so that a copy gets sent to your apprentice.

That’s a natural part of the selection process because the apprentice – mentor relationship can rely quite a bit on personal chemistry and whether or not the visions align.

Using a Client Service Extranet for Efficient Online Collaboration

Posted January 18th, 2010 by
Categories: Uncategorized

Efficient collaboration with clients is essential for any service firm. Traditionally, collaboration has focused on face-to-face meetings, supported by email to share work in progress.

Over the past several years, a new tool has grown in popularity: the client service extranet. While face-to-face meetings remain the most effective (and essential) collaboration tool, extranets have replaced email as the favored forum for sharing and organizing the vast number of documents that are part of all client/agency relationships.

Increasingly, service firms are using extranets as a platform to share work with clients securely and efficiently. They allow clients to log into a secure workspace and access the materials that pertain to them.

An extranet allows clients to:

- Access draft documents for approval or comment

- Preview artwork or multimedia presentations for approval or comment

- Provide important background information from the client before the project begins

- Archive past projects for easy comparison

- Access time and billing information

- Access a log of all project communication

- Reduce the number of or eliminate the need for face-to-face meetings which can make servicing remote clients easier and less expensive

Since most clients are busy people, using an extranet can save both time and frustration for the client and improve the agency’s level of service and as a result, the client’s overall satisfaction.

How Do You Set Up An Extranet?

You can set up and in-house extranet or purchase a hosted extranet from an application service provider for a monthly fee.

Building an in-house extranet

If you select an in-house implementation, you will need to have an existing intranet infrastructure available. Then you can purchase the necessary equipment and software and either hire or train personnel to maintain the system. The initial cost can be significant and may be beyond the reach of smaller firms.

Building an in-house extranet offer the following advantages and disadvantages compared to using a hosted (ASP) solution:

Advantages

- Complete control of user interface design

- Ability to customize functionality for each client

- Integration into internal systems

- Direct access to all user activity

Disadvantages

- High up-front development cost

- Requires staff expertise in the development of extranets

- Commitment of internal staff for 6 months to a year for planning, execution, review and implementation

- On-going commitment of internal staff for internal and client support, hosting, maintenance and upgrades

- Extensive internal and client training

Using a hosted solution

If you decide to purchase the extranet from an application service provider, you will pay a monthly fee for as long as you use the service. The hosting company provides the infrastructure, security, setup and maintenance of the system. It isn’t even necessary for you to have an internal network. Many will also provide training for your staff as well.

Using an Application Service provider (ASP) offers the following advantages and disadvantages compared to using an in-house extranet:

Advantages

- Proven track-record of web-based application

- Low cost of entry and predictable cost over time

- Rapid implementation as quickly as one day

- No internal staff commitment to internal and client support, hosting and maintenance

- Upgrades available at no cost

- Savings on internal server use

- Easier to learn, easier to use

Disadvantages

- Less freedom in user interface design

- Fixed functionality

Whether you choose to build and maintain your own extranet, or choose to use a hosted solution, your firm will streamline client services by providing faster access to critical documents, and by reducing the turn around time for review and approval. Which one you choose will depend on your company’s needs and existing resources.

2006 Trends in Robotic Space Exploration Rovers

Posted January 11th, 2010 by
Categories: Uncategorized

In 2005 we witnessed the Mars Rover just keep on trucking like the Energizer Bunny, putting even the famous “takes licking and keeps on ticking” Timex Watch commercials to shame. Robotics have certainly made incredible strides here on Earth with robotic surveillance aircraft, autonomous cars cruising driverless through the harsh desert, vacuuming your home and even in factories building the next generation of hybrid automobiles.

But Robotics have also made their mark on Martian Soil, on the Surface of Mars with tiny tracks from six mechanical wheels moving over hills and dales and rough terrain. 2005 was a year when our robotic scientists proved to this world and the next that there is nothing that humans cannot do, once they put their innovative minds to it and use their human intent to press on. Truly 2005 was an amazing year for robotic researchers to strut their stuff.

In 2006 we will see new designs in robotic exploration robots, once which will be spherical and use haptics methods for propulsion moving the inside center of gravity to move along. We will also see protruding spiked wheels to power up steeper terrain and systems, which can lift the rovers over rocks and steep embankments. We will also see self-assembly techniques for moving over rock formations, crossing gullies and assisting in Lunar Colony, mining manufacturing plant and life support construction for later human arrivals. We will see these concepts put forth in realistic terms. So, think on this in 2006

Power Networking: Getting Your Name Out There!

Posted January 10th, 2010 by
Categories: Uncategorized

Today’s economy presents some very special challenges to people who are unemployed, underemployed, or who are simply trying to give their own business venture a shot in the arm. At times, the job search can seem daunting, if not impossible, as it takes quite a bit of encouragement – and creativity – to keep pressing forward. A highly flexible [power] networking plan is important – one that requires “out of the box” thinking in order to increase your chances of securing desired employment.

The following is a list of options to pursue in order to launch a successful personal marketing plan, which is what networking is all about. Most will cost you little or nothing to implement and for the cash strapped person that can be a real help. I wrote these suggestions for business flight attendants who, understandably, have suffered much since the 2001 terrorist attacks. You can easily modify the suggestions for your particular field of interest.

1. Attend aviation job fairs [carry plenty of business cards and copies of your résumé with you].

2. Join an employment support group.

3. List your résumé with an agency.

4. Create an online résumé for additional exposure.

5. Go to retirement parties of former associates.

6. Become your local airport’s liaison to the surrounding community.

7. Attend a catering class.

8. Form a networking group in your area.

9. Go to conventions.

10. Attend other aviation related meetings [medical seminars, safety and security symposiums, dinners, golf outings, barbecues, fund raisers, 10K races].

11. Serve on an aviation related committee as a volunteer.

12. Volunteer for the Corporate Angel Network.

13. Accept other types of employment within your target company [i.e., dispatcher, sales, customer service, etc.].

14. Write an article about some aspect of corporate aviation and publish it online.

15. Organize a wine tasting seminar in your area or approach a local caterer/vineyard about being aviation’s representative to their business [be prepared to offer plenty of free publicity for them].

16. Work temporarily for a caterer specializing in inflight service.

17. Start a part time business by selling a product that corporate aviators need.

18. Finally, for the savvy [some would say nervy] flight attendant the following type of suggestion could produce dividends: Hang out at the local after work watering hole where aviation folks gather. Learn the language [culture] of the company; find out who the movers and shakers are, etc.

Some people might accuse you of being a shameless self promoter, as if you had a contagious disease. Let them think the worst of you while they sit at home fretting about work and while you are winging your way to points hither and yon!

Do not be deterred, but start thinking outside the parameters you [or others] have imposed on yourself; your goal is employment and your name is golden – as such, gold must be prominently displayed in order to command the proper attention [employment] that it so richly deserves!

The Colic Baby

Posted January 10th, 2010 by
Categories: Uncategorized

When a baby has colic, the family environment is stressful and many family members may become upset or on edge. This is most often seen in new parents. Some symptoms of colic may be that the baby cries loudly for three hours, the baby has bowel pains or the baby pulls their feet up under themselves and clenches their fists. New parents become alarmed and upset that their new baby may cry for hours, even though they have tried just about everything to comfort the the baby.

Causes of Colic

There is no known one cause of colic. Doctors have several theories of what causes infant colic. The most popular theory is that the child had ingested air along with either the mother’s milk or bottled milk. Drinking too fast or in gulps causes air to enter the baby’s stomach which leads to gastrointestinal pain, thus the baby becomes colic. Another theory some believe is that if the baby is breast fed and the mother is eating a lot of gas producing foods such as orange juice, vegetables, like onions and cabbage, apples, plums, spicy food and caffeinated products such as cola, chocolate and tea, the baby will receive the same result through breast milk. A third theory is that infants have an immature nervous system that is unable to cope with all the intense new stimulations of new life events. As the day progresses, the stress overcomes them and they cry for hours.

Solutions For a Colic Baby

Infant colic is very common in new born children. It is not the result of poor parenting skills. In fact, about 1/3 of all babies experience colic, so having a colic baby is not uncommon. In most cases infant colic will disappear in three months. But what can you do now? How can you reduce colic symptoms? There is no single treatment for a colic baby. Many parents have experienced success trying the following methods:

1. Hold your baby and rock it in your arms.

2. Put your baby in a swing and gently rock it back and fourth.

3. Take the baby for a car ride.

4. Carry the infant in a sling or take it for a carriage ride.

5. Try turning on a fan or vacuum, using them as white noise.

6. Try using a pacifier.

7. Give the baby a warm bath.

8. Try burping the baby.

9. Use Simethicone drops to reduce the baby’s gas pains.

10. If you are the mother, and you are breast feeding, vary your diet to see if you are eating some food which produces gas. The baby would receive this food through your breast milk.

Summary of Infant Colic

Most of the time newborn colic is nothing to worry about. Make sure you go over the possible solutions for a colic baby which are listed above. Ask neighbors and friends. They have often already been through infant colic. Consult your doctor if your baby screams constantly or if the infant colic is accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, constipation or absence of urine. These symptoms may indicate a more serious problem. If you are new parents, congratulations!

The New Dark Ages

Posted January 6th, 2010 by
Categories: Uncategorized

When I was growing up in a slum in Israel, I devoutly believed that knowledge and education will set me free and catapult me from my miserable circumstances into a glamorous world of happy learning. But now, as an adult, I find myself in an alien universe where functional literacy is non-existent even in developed countries, where “culture” means merely sports and music, where science is decried as evil and feared by increasingly hostile and aggressive masses, and where irrationality in all its forms (religiosity, the occult, conspiracy theories) flourishes.

The few real scholars and intellectuals left are on the retreat, back into the ivory towers of a century ago. Increasingly, their place is taken by self-taught “experts”, narcissistic bloggers, wannabe “authors” and “auteurs”, and partisan promoters of (often self-beneficial) “causes”.

Dismal results ensue: the Wikipedia “encyclopedia” is “edited” by anonymous users with unlimited access to its contents and no credentials; fads like environmentalism and alternative “medicine” spread malignantly and seek to silence dissidents, sometimes by violent means; the fare served by the media now consists exclusively of soap operas and reality TV shows; Reading is on terminal decline; with few exceptions, the “new media” are a hodgepodge of sectarian view and fabricated “news”; the few credible sources of reliable information have long been drowned in a cacophony of fakes and phonies.

It is a sad mockery of the idea of progress. The more texts we make available online, the more research is published, the more books are written – the less educated people are, the more they rely on visuals and sounds rather than the written word, the more they seek to escape and be anesthetized rather than be challenged and provoked.

Even the ever-sliming minority who do wish to be enlightened are inundated by a suffocating and unmanageable avalanche of indiscriminate data, comprised of both real and pseudo-science. There is no way to tell the two apart, so a “democracy of knowledge” reins where everyone is equally qualified and everything goes and is equally merited. This relativism is dooming the twenty-first century to become the beginning of a new “Dark Age”, hopefully a mere interregnum between two periods of genuine enlightenment.

World of Warcraft Gold Guide

Posted December 30th, 2009 by
Categories: Uncategorized

Having enough Gold in World of Warcraft is one of the most important aspects of the game. Gold has a major effect on your game play. Gold of course has their common known usage in a mmorpg game which is used to buy and sell items from vendors and other players. In world of Warcraft, gold can be used for training. To learn new skills you are required to pay the trainer a fee. Alot of gold would be required to perfect your character. Here are some tips to help you farm World of Warcraft Gold.

Grabbing a profession early in the game can most definitely have its advantage. You are able to level up your profession easily and gain its benefits. 2 professions we highly suggest starting with is mining and skinning. As you kill animals and other creatures in World of Warcraft you can easily skin the animals and sell them to vendors or other players with a nice load sum of profit. You are also leveling your profession as well. While you’re out leveling your character I’m sure you will kill a numerous amount of mobs that you can skin. The mining profession is another great profession. You will oftenly run into caves which may have some very prosperious mineral ores. Some minerals are very popular in the game and are highly demanded.

Questing in World of Warcraft is unlike any other MMORPG released. Quests are one of the biggest advantages you can have in the game. While you’re out leveling grab a quest each time you get. Only takes a matter of seconds. Not only will you receive EXP from killing the mobs in the quest but you will also gain additional EXP from completing the quest along with some nice items and money. A great bonus added to help players level faster and get richer of course.

Gears in World of Warcraft can get quite expensive. Alot more expensive than just training. From levels 1-40 I highly suggest not investing any money on buying gears or items. Low level characters are not too gear dependent. The quests should be able to provide you just about everything you need. Save the extra gold you have for higher level gears.

Certain types of mobs tend to have better drops than others. From what we’ve noticed so far, humanoids tend to drop more gold and items than any other creature in the game. So while you’re out leveling away, try to kill as many humanoids as you can. If you find these tips useful check out our website http://www.worldofwarcraftgoldguide.com for even better WoW gold guides.

A Vital Guide To Selecting The Right Bedroom Furniture

Posted December 2nd, 2009 by
Categories: Uncategorized

Although concealed away from other rooms in the apartment, the bedroom is an important place to spend time relaxing & sleeping. That is why it is incredibly beneficial to invest in high-class furniture & accessories to make your bedroom a more snug living space.

The most needed item of furniture you can find a bedroom is definitely the bed. Beds in this day and age come in numerous sizes and shapes. For starters, beds can be purchased as a single, double, king-size or super king-size.

While size is a main feature, the exact style of the bed you acquire will also make a big difference in how precisely your bed will be specifically utilised. If you are dependant on room space, then go for either a cabin bed or storage bed that has fitting storage drawers below.

If you get pleasure from having people over often then ensure you purchase a guest bed that meets your exact requirements. A guest bed has a supplementary pull-out mattress underneath. You can also get a folding bed for friends & family as this bed is small and lightweight, which provides easy manoeuvring.

If you are restricted on bedroom space for your friends & family, then purchase a sofa bed. Sofa beds look exactly like sofas & with this in mind can be matched to your family room decor, yet also convert into a snug sleeping option for friends & family.

To get the most satisfaction and robustness out of your bed, you will certainly need to purchase a mattress. There is a broad variety of mattresses to pick from, with one of the most trendy styles around being a Memory Foam mattress. The attractiveness of a Memory Foam mattress in contrast to other mattresses is that it can mould to the form of your body for additional comfort and support.

When finding your mattress, always guarantee that it’s the matching size as your bed. For instance, a single bed will only take a single mattress, whereas a double bed requires a double mattress.

To complete your bed, go for a duvet cover that complements your décor. Not merely do duvet covers come in an extensive variety of styles and shades, but they can very easily be produced with green materials. What’s more, duvets are light & easy to clean. Find a vast selection home products including; bedroom furniture, leather sofas and roman blinds from leading brands online.

Another great item of bedroom furniture you should buy is a chest of drawers. A chest of drawers keeps a lot of your clothing, and can also be styled to other bedroom furniture you may have.

Manage Your Anger Before It Manages You

Posted November 10th, 2009 by
Categories: Uncategorized

I want to start by defining what anger is. It is important to make it clear that everyone experiences anger. It is an emotion and temporary in nature. Anger involves physiological as well as emotional arousal. Like any emotion, it ranges in intensity. It also ranges in frequency and durance. People express anger in all sorts of ways; many are likely to lead to negative health consequence, lost jobs, damaged relationships, and even possibly legal consequences.

I want to specifically discuss rage, which is an extreme, intense and potentially disabling expression of anger leading to aggressive behavior. Uncontrollable blow ups are common in people who have maladaptive ways of coping with emotions. There are steps you can take to eliminate rage. A rage eliminator strategy involves the following steps.

1. Recognize that rage holds roots in your expectations about how other people “should” behave.
2. This one is tough, but people will at some time “fail” to live up to your expectations.
3. In these moments of disappointment, your feelings are likely to be hurt.
4. Rather than express disappointment or hurt you may “stuff” your feelings down.
5. In this unresolved state you convert disappointment to resentment and ultimately rage by telling yourself things such as “how dare he/she…”
6. If you maintain this unproductive conversation with your self you will likely lead to feelings of self pity.

7. When you feel sorry for your self you may begin to tell yourself that this kind of thing “always” happens. This contributes to a feel of being a “victim”.
8. Feeling like a victim it becomes easier to talk yourself into such things as “I’ll show him/her”. “I’ll let them have it”.
9. Once you have given your permission to “retaliate” is when rageful behavior can occur.
10. In the aftermath you may feel guilty about your rageful display. This can lead to a mixture of feeling crummy about yourself and continuing to feel resentful toward the other person for “doing it to me”.

If you are a rager, your cycle may be slightly different. However, you can learn the specifics of your cycle. It is hard work, but the long term pay off is worth it. You can learn to alter your expectations of other people and learn to express yourself more effectively when you are feeling hurt or disappointed.

Here are some quick rage busting ideas:

1. Write down some of your past rageful displays. You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. With each incident include initially a three column technique. First is the situation. Second is what you were saying to yourself about this situation. Third is your resulting emotion and behavior.

2. Next think about each incident and connect with the “subtler” emotions you felt at the time, such as hurt or disappointment.

3. Then write down how these feelings relate to your expectations for others. Related to this, include some of the “worst fears” you have about relationships. Do you fear humiliation? Do you fear the person will leave you? Do you think people will think poorly about you? Rejection? Imperfection?

4. Identify the likelihood of your worst fears. Also identify what that would mean if the worst fear actually happened. You will likely conclude that it would be undesirable, but not the terrible life ending, devastating thing you had imaged.

5. Identify things you could say to yourself to to keep from converting feelings of hurt to feeling of rage.

6. Practice in your mind past incidents where you blew up. However, this time bring yourself to the point before you blew up and use self talk strategies to work this situation through more effectively. Mental rehearsal is a power strategy. It is used by top athletes to rehearse successful performances. It is can also be used as a way of “retraining” yourself to think, feel and behave in different ways. Practice this strategy frequently.

7. Write a list of people you need to have a conversation of responsibility with about your past actions. Remember, an apology or statement of responsibility is more effective when you have created and maintained change for a time.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mike Davison
